Introduction and background notes (vocational context)
The burden of illness associated with for example overweight and obesity, infectious diseases such as Zika virus is of growing concern to the health and social care practitioner. In recognition of these important Contemporary issues to health and social care education, experts in the health and social care sector, including expertise in public health, mental health, disability, social workers, and a variety of other specialities including GP’s, legislators were convened at a recent conference. To achieve D1 conclusions have been arrived at through synthesis of ideas and have been justified analysing different techniques for disseminating information relating to health and social care.
Task 2: LO2 Understand how issues of public concern related to health and social care are presented in the media
(Up to 750 words)
Scenario: What you must do
Zika is a virus that is spread by mosquitoes. A pregnant mother can pass it to her baby during pregnancy or around the time of birth. There have also been reports that the virus has spread through blood transfusions and sexual contact. There have been outbreaks of Zika virus in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, parts of the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The editors from the health section of the online BBC report are also attending the conference wants you to write an editorial piece with the aim of not creating moral panic in the public using Zika virus or any recent issue of public concern as examples related to health and social care and how it is presented in the media.
In your editorial piece, you are to (2.1) explain ways in which the media may be used to influence the attitudes and behaviour of people in relation to health and social care issues. [P2.1, M2] In the other section of the editorial piece you are to (2.2) evaluate how the public can assess the reliability and validity [P2.2]
To achieve M2, complex information has been synthesised using a case study found in the media to explain ways in which the media is used to influence the attitudes and behaviour of people in the case study in relation to health and social care issues.
Task 3: LO3 Be able to carry out research into different perspectives on a specific issue relating to health and social care
Scenario: At the conference, you gave a PPT highlighting how to be able to carry out research into different perspectives on a specific issue relating to health and social care. For that presentation, you are to cover the following areas.
What you must do
3.1 Carry out research into a different perspective on a specific issue relating to health and social care. [P3.1] 3.2 monitors how different perspectives gleaned from reliable sources on a specific health and social care issue have changed over time. [P3.2] 3.3. assess the relevance of the findings to health and social care practice locally [P3.3, M3]
3.4 analyse the factors that have influenced the development of different perspectives over a period of time. [P3.4, D2]
Specific issue = an issue relevant to health and social care (i.e. disability; safeguarding; obesity etc.)
To achieve D2, Substantial activities, projects or investigations have been planned, managed and organised when analysing the factors such as religious and cultural beliefs that have influenced the development of different perspectives of your specific issue over a period of time  To achieve M3 coherent, logical development of principles/concepts for the intended audience has been demonstrated when assessing the relevance of your findings to health and social care practice locally.
Presentation Guidelines
1. The presentation lasts 10 minutes only. Arrange with the tutor an appropriate time for your presentation 2. You must present your work as a PPT only. Failure to do so means you will fail the presentation. 3. You should reference your work using a range of sources. 4. Submit your slides (6 per page) to your tutor.
Task 4: LO4 Understand the likely influence contemporary perspectives on health and social care issues have on the development of service. (Up to 1000 words)
Scenario
The Independent and The Guardian newspapers are looking for health journalists to write articles about the likely influence contemporary perspectives on health and social care issues have on the development of service. Write a journal article that demonstrates.
What to do
4.1 analyse the extent to which local attitudes reflect those found at a national level. [P4.1, D3] 4.2 evaluate the validity of public attitudes and behaviours in relation to a specific issue [P4.2] 4.3 justify possible consequences of contemporary thinking for health and social care provision and services [P4.3, M1]
To achieve D3, ideas have been generated and decisions are taken when analysing the extent to which local attitude reflect those found at a national level.  To achieve M1, complex problems with more than one variable have been explored when justifying the possible consequences of your contemporary thinking for health and social care provisions and services
